Elements that are placed very close to each other will often be perceived as one group. The close proximity unifies them together and will help to form a figure within an image overall proximity allows to different objects to be seen as one and be united together. A pair or group of objects that are close to each other are more likely to be perceived as belonging together than if they are far apart. This is the most strongest when the two objects are together as they can dominate the whole frame. The whole concept behind this is that the space and time are linked together to create proximity in the image. There are overall three types of proximity.
Close edge-The general concept for proximity states that the closer items are to one another, the more likely they are to be seen as a group. The amount of space involved is relative. Close edge relationships can also form groups in any direction.
Overlap- The strongest shape between two items happens when they overlap.
Combine- It is possible to group various items together by using an external element that acts to combine the items .
